"Conversations with
the Lord" In our early life, Roger was a craftsman and I was a dancer. For each of us, our art forms were very visceral and instinctive, as natural breathing. God was not our first love. When Roger had his first series of strokes, our world as we knew it crumbled. He had a "near death" experience in which the Lord told him "it was not his time to be here...he had a mission". It was as if the Lord was pressing His purpose into Roger's being...to paint pictures that would carry the message of hope to those in need of recovery. Roger's first theme was "the lighthouse series." My cry was, "Open the eyes of my heart Lord, I want to see You." I longed to know Him. I was so hungry to understand His word, but it was like a foreign language. One day I heard, "Shhh...watch...what do you see?" I closed my eyes, and a new relationship was born. Visions ignited by the Holy Spirit began to burn in me; sometimes they were dreams, so real they still make me tremble. At best, I would scribble these images in my journal, not always understanding there meaning in importance; and certainly I could never reproduce the image as I saw it, or experienced it. They were mysterious; full of radiance and glorious energy. When I was "ready" He would lead me to scripture, and the image would marry the Word, becoming the glue that bonded the Word into my spirit. When I first began to learn the art of printmaking, the Lord impressed it upon me then; "scribbles" were exactly the way he wanted me to translate the essence of what I saw, as if the act of carving etched His Word even deeper into my heart. It is not the "art" itself that is important. It is "the way" the Lord teaches me to wield the Sword of His Word. Jesus gives us His Word to speak into all situations;to fight off the enemy, defend ourselves, and rescue others from the evil one. Doing our art is the way He leads us to His Word. Displaying our art is an act of worship, a way to share what He has implanted in us. We are not perfect. But it is our pleasure to honor Him. The gift is not our talent. The gift is Christ Jesus, and how He encourages us to demonstrate His Word in our daily life. By keeping the art simple, we are free to honor the Lord with our lives, responding to Him in faith.
